Intro/Specs/Craftsmanship

Just released this fall, the Hardy Aydon is a new series of rods featuring versatile medium-fast actions. While I personally gravitate more towards fast-action rods overall, I don't mind a softer rod for smaller fish in more delicate situations. With this in mind, I had an 8'6" 4-weight Aydon sent out for chasing bass and panfish on local ponds.

Length: 8'6"

Rated Action: Medium-fast

Line Weight: 4

Pieces: 4

Material: Graphite

Measured Weight: Approx 2.66 ounces

Guides: (1) Titanium-framed stripping guide / Chrome single-foot

Reel Seat: Aluminum w/ burled wood insert

Rod Tube/Sock: Yes/Yes

Price: $525.00

Hardy Aydon rod blanks are designed with multi-modulus graphite using their Sintrix material. While you can click that link for a detailed description, Hardy summarizes it nicely with the following:

"All carbon rods utilise carbon fibres that are bonded together by an adhesive resin. The resin material used in SINTRIX® is produced by 3M®, it is a unique and patented material incorporating silica nano spheres which provides two distinct benefits.

Firstly the microscopic silica spheres are able to evenly surround every individual carbon fibre filament providing a matrix of strength throughout the rod. Secondly, being spherical, the silica particles are able to resist pressure and compression from any angle. This is particularly important because it is under compression forces, on the underside of a bent rod, rather than tension forces, on the outside of the curve, that carbon fibre is most likely to weaken and potentially break. So by resisting compression better, SINTRIX® rods are stronger."

Down at the grip, the cork handle is of great quality and feels comfortable in hand. I was initially surprised to see that the grip appeared a touch on the long side, and comparing side-by-side to another 4-weight and a couple of 5-weights confirms this. In addition to its length, there's a distinct bulge in the cork right where the casting hand goes. Thankfully, it's not too big and actually gives the grip some added comfort that I wasn't expecting.

Hardy designed the Aydon with a black aluminum reel seat and a burled wood spacer. The seat uses two up-locking rings for added security, both of which turn smoothly and tighten with a feel that tells you this is a quality seat. Like the grip, the end of the reel seat is also a bit elongated, as it sticks out just a little more than average.

The blank is a glossy olive green with light olive wraps. There's one titanium-framed stripping guide, while single-foot chrome running guides make up the remaining guide train. All the guides are on the smaller side. On a side note, you can read more about snake vs. single-foot guides ,here.

My test rod was crafted by careful hands, with no craftsmanship errors to speak of.

Fishing/Testing

I tested my 4-weight Aydon with a ,Ross Evolution LTX 3/4 loaded with ,RIO Elite Gold fly line, which features a 30-foot head weight of 126 grains. This line's weight places it at the very upper end of AFFTA's 4-weight line rating.

At short range, the Aydon simply feels fantastic. It loads easily, is highly accurate, and is buttery smooth. The rated medium-fast action seems pretty much spot-on here, as the rod flexes well and gives excellent feedback. I can definitely see this rod being a go-to for some precise dry fly fishing for trout, but living here in Florida, pond bluegill act as fun substitutes!

When casting at modest distances of around 30–40 feet, the Aydon continues to offer above-average performance. As someone who mainly fishes fast rods, I'm able to easily adjust to the slightly softer action of this blank and find it extremely satisfying to cast. The RIO Elite Gold also makes a great match for these short to medium distances; this rod does not need an overweight line to perform.

It was no surprise that the Aydon doesn't quite have the necessary punch at really long distances. I was unable to shoot the entire line the few times I attempted to max the rod out, but this rod isn't intended to do that. For doing typical 4-weight things, it's pretty awesome.

This is one setup that truly feels feather-light in hand. The rod alone weighed about 2.66 ounces by itself on my scale and pairs up awesomely with a lightweight reel. I'm pretty sensitive to weight, especially when it comes to the lighter line weights, but the Aydon has a serious lack of heft.

Conclusion

The 8'6" 4-weight Aydon is truly impressive and is one of the best casting 4-weight fly rods I've thrown recently—at any price. Speaking of which, the modest $525 price tag makes it even more attractive, pricing it several hundred dollars under many premium offerings out there. While I'm not entirely sure how to pronounce the word Aydon, I am certain this is a rod that will satisfy any fan of 4 weights.

Besides single-handed rods, other offerings include trout spey, spey, and 6-piece travel rods. Models span from a 7'0" 3-weight to a 14'9" 10/11, and each rod comes with a square tube and sock. Prices range from $495-$950 depending on the model.

(words and images by Sage/Farbank)

For 2023, Sage introduces the next generation of flats-specific fly reels in the ENFORCER Reel family.

Sage’s all-new ENFORCER Reel family has been built around the performance developed with their big game THERMO Reels–sized down to accommodate a lighter package and the overall needs of the serious saltwater flats angler. Designed with peak performance in mind, the ENFORCER offers everything the flats angler needs in a reel, whether taming the explosive runs of double-digit Bonefish or putting the brakes on the freight train pull of triple-digit tarpon. Simply put, this is the ultimate saltwater reel for flats and heavy-duty fly-fishing applications.

“The ENFORCER has been designed to bring exceptional stability and smoothness to the fish fight – this has been achieved through an updated bearing configuration. Compared to the previous SPECTRUM Max family, we have also increased the upper limit of resistance in the drag system, so that you have smooth stopping power when it matters.”– Joseph Conrad, Sage Reel Designer

Sage beefed up the O-rings and drag plates for added durability, consistency, and reliability. Maximum drag has been increased by 50% over the ENFORCER’s predecessor, the SPECTRUM Max; you’ll find eight pounds at the arbor in the 7/8 size, 15 pounds in the 9/10 size, and 17 pounds at the arbor in the 11/12 size. For saltwater anglers fishing heavy tippets who don’t want to let fish run continuously—or who care enough about their fingers to avoid palming fast spinning spools—this increased drag allows them to get most out of their reel without sacrificing any metacarpals.

The ENFORCER is more durable than any of Sage’s saltwater flats reels, with larger drag discs to better disperse pressure and maintain the consistency of the power band throughout the fight by stabilizing inherent stopping strength. An all-new reel foot design with radiused corners prevents abrasion to leaders wrapped around the reel foot for storage —or in the unfortunate, but inevitable, moments when the line wraps around the foot in the initial chaos of the hookup.

ENFORCER Highlights

• 50% Higher Drag Than SPECTRUM Family

• Enlarged and Improved Seals

• Increased Durability

• More Rigidity

• New Radius-Cornered Reel Foot

Features

- Ultra-Robust SCS Drag

- One Revolution Drag Knob with numbered and detented settings

- Radius-cornered reel foot to prevent line/leader abrasion

- Large arbor for fast line pick-up

<![CDATA[New Sage SALT R8 Saltwater Fly Rods]]>https://www.demystifly.com/post/new-sage-salt-r8-fly-rods63bb75a94e519e3f37c0a45aWed, 11 Jan 2023 06:12:03 GMTPaul

(words/images by Sage/Farbank)

For 2023, Sage introduces the next evolution in saltwater fly rod technology with the SALT R8.

Whether maximizing your limited shots for Tarpon or blocking the right moon cycle for a Permit trip—or just delivering a quick, confident cast through wind at distance—saltwater is a game where patience and urgency are equally critical to maximizing opportunity. Whether on idyllic flats, coastal beaches, or backcountry mangroves, you need faith—in your cast, your reaction time, and your choice of rod.

For Sage, having Revolution 8 Technology in hand meant now was the time to shape a dramatic advancement in saltwater rods that spoke to these truths right from the heart and birthplace of the discipline. Welcome to the SALT R8—More Fight, More Touch.

To really understand what was happening in the heart and soul of saltwater fly fishing, Sage sent their senior rod designers to the birthplace of the discipline in South Florida. During their lengthy saltwater immersion, they listened carefully to the shops, guides, scientists, stories, and legends to truly understand what was happening on the water and what was really required to shape and hone a more perfect tool for saltwater sight fishing. Steeped in those cumulative decades of tradition, insight and knowledge, Sage’s design team then harnessed the power of Revolution 8 Technology and their precise knowledge of performance rod taper to create what naturally evolved into the fight and touch of the SALT R8 collection.

Most salt rods are built for pure power and ultimate strength—that is table stakes for the venue and the discipline. With Sage’s new R8 graphite, adding 25% more strength-per-weight was the easy part—a simple function of material advancement—but one that also increased the fight in the rod even down to the six-weight. Sage increased the pure pulling power without the need to add more material, fillers,or reinforcement. The outcome is simple, providing the ability for faster landing times and reducing fish stress and catch-and-release pressure on ever so delicate ecosystems.

As Sage Rod Designer Peter Knox describes,“The new R8 Technology brings a level of strength to the product that we couldn't have achieved otherwise. And so if you look at the SALT R8, versus R8 CORE, you're going to find you've got twenty to thirty percent greater strength."

More strength and fight were an obvious upgrade, yet few salt rods, especially in the heavier weights, achieve the importance of feel for fine touch shots and precise presentations. Shaping a taper that brought this increased touch into the equation took more time. Yet after a long residence in the birthplace of saltwater fly fishing, and working directly with the experienced guides there, Sage’s rod designers found the right profile and fiber alignment that delivered strength, fine touch presentation, and a more intuitive sweet spot to a class of rods that have long had a reputation as unwieldy, unforgiving, and difficult. With the SALT R8, gone are the days of sacrificing the feel and touch in your saltwater rod.

As Sage Rod Designer Peter Knox describes,“These rods have been designed a little bit easier to load, and so they're a little bit quicker out of the hand. Having that touch to just flip a little cast in there, land the fly with enough time to sink, 'cause that fish isn't very happy- that can spell out the difference between success and failure on any given day.”

SALT R8 Highlights

Saltwater Specific 25% Greater Strength Per Rod – Greater Pulling power equals more fight for faster landing and less stress on delicate ecosystems.

Enhanced Durability – Enhanced toughness withstands more rugged situations and demands of remote travel.

More Intuitive Sweet Spot – Prioritizes touch and speed for shorter shots and on-demand casts.

Saltwater Specific Guide Set – Fuji Titanium K-guides resist corrosion, while angled shape prevents snags and tangling in the chaos of the fight. Oversized chrome snake guides and tip-top allow larger saltwater knots to pass with ease.

Heavy-Duty Reel Seat – Built for enhanced contact and confidence, heavy-duty reel seat and oversized locking rings keep reel tight to the rod for greater contact, rigidity, and a more direct connection when fighting powerful high-stakes fish.

As Sage Rod Designer Peter Knox summarizes,“The SALT R8 is our next generation answer to saltwater fly fishing. It's a formulation of our new R8 Technology that helps us create a super durable and high performance fishing tool that's been wrapped up with the best guide set you can find.”

Available in a number of saltwater-application models from 6 through 15 weight, there is sure to be ago-to tool to fit every angler’s salty pursuits. For more information on Revolution 8 technology and SALT R8, visit https://farbank.com/collections/sage-salt-r8-saltwater

<![CDATA[Simms Challenger Mid Deck Shoes Review]]>https://www.demystifly.com/post/simms-challenger-mid-deck-shoes-review634cc31ee427d65e239ce738Sun, 08 Jan 2023 00:14:34 GMTPaul

One of my favorite times to be on the water is when it's raining. Although the fishing can be absolutely phenomenal, it can also be absolutely miserable if you're not 100% prepared for the adverse conditions. Even if much of your body stays dry, having wet feet will likely make you feel cold and uncomfortable all day long. I've certainly been there before, but footwear like the new Simms Challenger Mid Deck Shoes help me avoid these situations.

These shoes are designed tall to provide more substantial coverage over a typical low-top style and feature a tough, abrasion-resistant mesh with TPU overlays in high-wear areas and a membrane that's waterproof and breathable. To reduce line snags, there's also a low-profile lacing system.

Simms gives the interior an anti-microbial treatment along with a molded arch support and heel cup.

For wet or dry grip, Simms uses outsole-grade EVA with micro-siped rubber pods in wear-prone areas. Of course, the treads are non-marking.

The best test of these shoes came recently on a trip out to Northern California. During my first day on the water, we fished in cold, moderate rain the whole day and my feet were comfortable the entire time. In addition, the material of these shoes keep my feet dry and warm without that nasty clammy "airtight" feeling. I also wanted to test the shoes by placing the main parts under a direct stream of faucet water, and moisture did not seep through the material whatsoever.

With the taller design and different tongue design, these shoes don't slip on quite as easily for me as a typical low-top shoe. However, by loosening up the laces a bit more than usual, they go on without a huge effort.

I'm a size 12 and these fit me just fine. I would definitely call my pair true-to-size. Coming from someone who never wears high-top shoes, one thing I noticed immediately was a little pinching just above the ankle. Although noticeable for me, the shoes remain plenty comfortable to wear for many hours—as I have done thus far!

The tread design seems to do its job well. From concrete, to nonskid, to carpet, and even jumping from a boat deck onto soaked shoreline grass, I never slipped up or skidded out.

These shoes have proven to be excellent in both wet and dry conditions. I used to wear clunky rain boots for boat or bank fishing in the rain, so it's nice to have an option that's more comfortable, easier to move around in, and looks like a more typical shoe/boot.

Simms offers Challenger Mid Deck Shoes in sizes 8–14 in the carbon (as tested) color. They sell for $139.95 on the Simms website.

Intro/Specs/Craftsmanship

If you're a conventional bass fishing addict like I am, the name Kistler should instantly ring a bell. Based in Texas, the brand has garnered a loyal following over the years, especially with rods such as their well-known Helium series. For 2023, Kistler is switching things up by expanding into the fly fishing market with both rods and reels. Although this move came as a complete surprise to me, it's always intriguing when a company decides to jump into a brand-new segment. With that said, let's take a closer look at their new 5/6 Bakk fly reel.

Reel Size: 5/6

Measured Weight: Approx 4.48 ounces

Diameter: 3.74 inches

Arbor Width: 1.02 inches

Machined/Cast: Machined

Arbor: Large

Backing Capacity (20 lb): WF5F -140 yards / WF6F - 120 yards

Drag Material: Proprietary resin (fully sealed)

Tested Max Drag: Approx 2 1/2 pounds

Spool Release: Twist-off center cap

Reel Pouch Included: Yes

R/L Interchangeable: Yes

Available Colors: Gunmetal

Reel Price: $299.00

Bakk fly reels are named after Jeremiah Bakk, who leveraged his 25+ years of fly fishing experience, decade of guiding in Colorado and Wyoming, and overall passion and involvement in the sport when designing this fresh reel series.

This reel is fully machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and finished in a satin gunmetal color scheme. As a result, this creates a simplistic, stealthy look which will also allow the reel to visually match well with a variety of rods. Throughout the spool and frame, the design is very open, with all kinds of porting for both weight reduction and to help the backing/line dry off faster.

At about 4.48 ounces on my scale, the Bakk 5/6 is on the light side for its size and compares favorably with other popular machined fly reels like the Redington RISE 5/6 (4.6 ounces), Galvan Torque T-5 (4.8 ounces), Abel VAYA 5/6 (5.45 ounces), and Waterworks-Lamson Guru S 4/5/6 (4.41 ounces).

My test reel showcases a nice level of build quality. Tolerances around the reel foot and spool/frame look tight, and both the drag knob and handle don't have any looseness or play.

Fishing/Testing

The drag setup on my 5/6 Bakk reel consists of stacked carbon washers that are fully sealed. Like many reels of similar size, this drag won't win any awards for sheer power, as it produced only about 2 1/2 pounds of drag pressure on my scale at full lock. What's more important in a reel like this is the drag's smoothness, and the Bakk definitely has that. Even with the knob jammed down tight, the drag eases into engagement without a hint of startup inertia and stays consistent as line peels off.

The drag knob features two types of surface texturing. I can't say if this provides a definite advantage or not, but it's plenty easy to grip with dry or wet fingers. When turning the drag knob, there's noticeable detents and a quality clicking sound that's easy to hear. Going from zero to maximum drag is achieved in roughly 1 3/4 turns.

During retrieval, the size and surface pattern of the handle provides comfort and a sure grip. Whether reeling or pulling off line, the incoming and outgoing clicks have a mild but high-quality sound.

Conclusion

Kistler's first entry into the fly market is a solid one, as the sounds and smoothness of the 5/6 Bakk get two thumbs up. No other reel sizes are currently available, but a 7/8 model is expected in summer 2023. In addition to Bakk reels, Kistler also offers Bakk rods that we might get to take out for a test drive in the near future!

If you're fly fishing and catching fish, it's most likely a pretty good time. However, if you're in a constant routine of targeting the same species, in the same places, and with the same tackle, it can take a little off the excitement factor. Don't get me wrong; catching fish is always a great time, but I've always enjoyed changing things up in one way or another. Even if typically fishing the same places every week, just altering your tackle can bring some "newness" to the overall experience.

Ditch the Graphite- Graphite is a wonderful thing; it's light, strong, and responsive. These are some of the reasons why it's the most popular material for constructing fly rod blanks and the go-to for many anglers, including myself. With that said, have you ever tried a rod built from an alternative material, like glass or bamboo? Although I have never fished a cane rod, I do have some experience with fiberglass rods, and they offer an entirely different feel and experience. The slow, soft action of a glass rod can take some getting used to, but I highly recommend trying one if you want to really switch things up.

Go Lighter- Are you always fly fishing with the same line size(s)? You might consider simply trying a setup that's one line weight smaller. If your trout rod of choice is always the standard 9-foot 5 weight, try a 4 weight sometime. You might be surprised how much bigger a 12-inch trout feels by just dropping a size down.

Go High End- I have a lot of love for all types of tackle, from affordable to premium. While there are some outstanding rods these days in the low-to-middle price tier, a truly high-end rod typically offers careful craftsmanship and a precise, ultra-responsive feel that's unrivaled by its more price-conscious peers. Simply put: a top-shelf fly rod offers an angler the highest quality experience possible. Once you fish with one, it might be tough to go back!

Click-Pawl Reel- A reel with a click-pawl drag system uses a clicker (aka pawl) that ticks loudly against the teeth of a gear to provide tension. These systems typically offer no to little adjustment, with any added tension coming from the angler's palm or fingers. I call these reels the "manual transmissions of the fly fishing world" because they require much more user input. Just like how many drivers will argue that a manual offers a more raw, interesting driving experience, some anglers feel that a click-pawl reel similarly upgrades their fishing experience, too.

(image and description from ECHO Fly Fishing)

Designed from scratch with the advanced angler in mind, ECHO Fly Fishing’s new TROUT X rods will change your game. Typically, rods are designed to excel on 30-50 foot casts. TROUT X rods ditch that “magic range” mentality with a unique curve that we call Variable Sweet Spot (VSS). This innovative approach allows expert casters to make optimal casts at any distance. Whether you’re targeting a small rainbow in a mountain stream or shooting across big open water, ECHO’s VSS technology is ready to deliver perfect casts.

“These rods are made with a flex curve that will help medium to advanced casters cover more water over more conditions than any rod we have produced in the past,” says ECHO’s Tim Rajeff.

TROUT X rods are four-piece setups with a mist green finish to help them blend into most trout environments. The snake guides are chrome plated for less friction and the stripper guides help improve line shooting. Half-wells grips and beautiful burlwood reel seats finish the look.

<![CDATA[Plano Airliner Telescoping Rod Tube Review]]>https://www.demystifly.com/post/plano-airliner-telescoping-rod-tube-review638a4001b9db8e2ff4ebb56cMon, 05 Dec 2022 03:27:51 GMTPaul

Above all else, a fishing rod travel tube needs to be robust. We've all heard horror stories about checked luggage being tossed around carelessly, and the last thing you want is to have your pricey fly rods treated like a sack of potatoes. Just imagine going on the dream trip of a lifetime only to arrive with a bunch of broken rods...talk about a nightmare!

If you're planning to just fly fish on your trip, chances are you can simply carry on your rods with a shorter tube designed for standard 9 foot 4-piece fly rods, such as this one. However, I always take a combination of both fly and 2-piece conventional rods with me, so a longer and wider tube is required. I know that multi-piece casting and spinning rods exist, but I just don't like conventional rods to have more than two pieces.

My travel tube for the last few years has been the popular Plano Airliner. Let's take a closer look at its different features and craftsmanship...

I've been happy with the tube so far, but I should cite two negatives. First, I wouldn't say the refinement ranking is super high, as some of the plastic edges are a little rough. There's even some loose plastic shavings to be found.

Second, you have to take the tube apart to access the rods inside; there's no door or twist-off end cap for easy access. Truthfully, this is a pain in the ass sometimes, but it's something I have to live with. Another series of popular travel fishing rod tubes, the Flambeau Bazuka, appears to offer an easy access door on each tube.

There's something very relaxing about boarding a plane with my hands holding onto nothing but a boarding pass. It costs a pretty penny these days to check luggage on a flight, and I usually have to check TWO pieces when I fly, but not having to worry about overhead baggage space is priceless. While there are some things about the Plano Airliner fishing rod tube that I'd change, it gets the job done and lets me fly without worrying about my precious rods.

Plano shows a price of $99.99 on their site, but the Airliner can be purchased cheaper at many other places. Personally, I grabbed one on Amazon for much less!

GIVE BACK TO THE YELLOWSTONE

Simms Joins Forces with Montana Freshwater Partners to Repair and

Restore One of the State’s Most Vital and Iconic Watersheds

In association with Montana Freshwater Partners, Simms Fishing Products, preeminent manufacturer of waders, outerwear, footwear, and technical apparel in fishing prepare to launch the all-new Simms Watershed Stockingfoot Wader, a wader designed to lend financial aid to the Yellowstone ecosystem in response to the devastating floods that occurred in the spring of this year.

In early June of 2022, a combination of an unusual atmospheric rain event and warm overnight temperatures coincided with Montana’s peak runoff, resulting in a devastating 500-year flood event. Due to the catastrophic flood, all five entrances to Yellowstone National Park closed, thousands of park visitors were evacuated, bridges, houses, and roadways were completely swept away leaving millions of dollars in damages behind, and years of rejuvenation ahead.

To the residents of southwest Montana, the Yellowstone River is not only a vital

economic resource, it’s an ecosystem that’s essential to their way of life.

Regarding the damage and destruction, Simms immediately leaned into to their longstanding heritage of making waders and embarked on a partnership project conceived to generate significant funding support towards a campaign designed to revitalize the iconic Yellowstone ecosystem.

Patterned after Simms’ multi-award winning G3 Guide Stockingfoot Wader, the all-new Simms Watershed Stockingfoot Wader utilizes excess Gore-Tex® Pro Shell fabric in a 3- layer upper and 4-layer lower portion of the wader. This lightweight fabric is breathable, durable, waterproof and offers an unhindered range of motion. Featuring an oversized stretch-woven zippered chest pocket and a microfleece lined, zippered, pass-through handwarmer pocket, the wader also comes equipped with adjustable suspenders with opposing buckles that allow for a waist-high conversion. For mobility and durability, Simms has incorporated their patented front and back leg seams. To round out the feature set, the wader includes integrated gravel guards and anatomically correct left and right stockingfeet with an antimicrobial finish. Available in 8 sizes, Simms Watershed Stockingfoot Waders will be available in limited quantities and can be purchased for $599.95 at simmsfishing.com and also through Simms’ vast retail network.

“It’s hard to put into words what the Yellowstone River and ecosystem means to us here at Simms. On the surface, it’s a picturesque, iconic trout fishery but in reality, it’s so much more than that. It’s where we unwind, recreate, create unforgettable memories and forge lifelong family bonds and friendships. The surrounding communities and lifestyle that comes with it truly embody our Fish It Well philosophy,” says Diane Bristol, Simms VP of Community & Culture. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Montana Freshwater Partners and couldn’t be more excited to utilize a product that’s so synonymous with our brand to help restore this national treasure that runs through our backyard.”

To announce the launch of the Simms Watershed Stockingfoot Wader, on Giving Tuesday, Simms made a $10,000 donation to the Yellowstone River Stewardship Campaign, called Give Back to the Yellowstone, a campaign developed to engage the community, out of state visitors, and business to give back to projects that support the overall health and vitality of the Yellowstone River.

Simms Watershed Stockingfoot Waders will be available in January of 2023 and through their sales, an additional $50,000 contribution will be made to the campaign and its continued efforts. The total contribution will go through a fund that’s been established through Montana Freshwater Partners, a 501c3 non-profit organization based in Livingston, Montana.

“The Yellowstone Stewardship Campaign was developed as a way for those who love and appreciate the Yellowstone to help protect it in a meaningful way,” says Wendy Weaver, Montana Freshwater Partners Executive Director. “It’s a grass roots effort to engage the community in directly funding projects that protect its health and resiliency, especially in the face of increased recreational use pressure, drought, and the aftermath of the flood. Simms has become a generous partner in this endeavor and we are incredibly thankful for their support and genuine interest to help protect this iconic river.”

Funds earned through this campaign will be invested in conservation and restoration projects that will improve water quality, fish habitat, late season flows and floodplain connectivity. Allocation of Simms’ contribution will go towards priority based, on-the-ground projects implemented collaboratively with local nonprofit organizations such as Montana Fresh Water partners, Upper Yellowstone Watershed Group, Park County Environmental Council, Trout Unlimited and others working in partnership with the Department of natural Resources, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Montana Fish Wildlife and parks, Custer Gallatin national Forest, and Bureau of Land Management.

<![CDATA[How Many Fly Rods Do You Need?]]>https://www.demystifly.com/post/how-many-fly-rods-do-you-need6379b5e42b9277f2b7e86aedSun, 27 Nov 2022 04:05:29 GMTPaul

If you're wondering how many fly rods you should buy, you're likely a true fly fishing enthusiast and are past the beginning stages. That's great! The problem is, as an angler moves forward in the sport, there can be increased confusion (and cost) when building out a tackle arsenal. After all, unless someone's fly fishing opportunities are very narrow, they're likely going to need more than just one setup.

Simply put, there's no single answer for everyone. Depending on where an angler lives, where they travel to, the targeted species, and other factors, the number of fly rods they need can range from one to ten or more!

First, let's take me for example. I get bored doing one thing too often, so I've always really enjoyed fly fishing for fresh and saltwater species equally. While the brands of my personal setups change over time, the line weights have been pretty standard through the years. Here's what I currently own and what I typically use them (or intend to use them) for. Of course, keep in mind that each combo can be used for far more than what my usage includes.

7'6" 4-weight: pond fishing, small-stream trout

8'6" 4-weight: pond and lake fishing, trout in small to medium waters

(2) 9'0" 5-weights: pond and lake fishing, all-around trout

9'0" 6-weight: bass, beach snook, streamer fishing for trout

9'0" 7-weight: bass, bay/beach/flats fishing on calmer days

9'0" 9-weight: HD bass fishing, bay/beach/flats fishing on windy days or with big flies

9'0" 10-weight: small to medium tarpon, light to medium offshore/bluewater fishing

9'0" 12-weight: adult tarpon, medium to heavy duty offshore/bluewater fishing

Different fly rods are needed not just for fish of different sizes, but to overcome variables like casting big flies or cutting through strong winds. For instance, while my 7-weight might be a fun rod for casting medium-sized flies to schoolie stripers on a calmer day, I'm going to be picking up the more powerful 9-weight on a windy day or if I'm tossing a heavier/larger fly to those exact same schoolies.

If an angler likes chasing different species like I do, the long-standing recommendation out there is to start with a 5 and 8 weight. Although I never personally followed this exact advice, it is an excellent starting point for many folks. The popular 5-weight is a great choice for a variety of trout and lighter freshwater situations, and the 8-weight is a wonderful rod size for heavier freshwater fishing and saltwater species like baby tarpon, bonefish, redfish, snook, and stripers.

Although they might not be absolutely perfect choices for everyone, 5 and 8-weight fly rods are highly versatile and make great "core" rods to base your tackle collection from. The nice thing is, many people start their fly fishing journey with a 5-weight rod, so that part is often already taken care of. Once a fly angler gains more experience and becomes increasingly familiar with the sport and their angling preferences, they can then be a bit more specific when making additional fly rod purchases in the future.

<![CDATA[Ross Evolution LTX 3/4 Fly Reel Review]]>https://www.demystifly.com/post/ross-evolution-ltx-3-4-fly-reel-review634cc33ef9eeb9d93ecbb249Mon, 14 Nov 2022 05:01:19 GMTPaul

Intro/Specs/Craftsmanship

The Ross Evolution LTX series are not exactly new reels, having been out for about four years now. Designed with attributes from the Evolution R and original Evolution LT, the result is a modern, downright sexy lineup that's suitable for fresh and saltwater use. While it took me forever to get my hands on an LTX, I recently became the owner of a new 3/4 model, which is the smallest in the family. Let's get into this reel and see if it's truly as good as what I've been hearing!

Reel Size: 3/4

Measured Weight: Approx 4.31 ounces

Diameter: 3.42 inches

Arbor Width: 0.97 inches

Machined/Cast: Machined

Arbor: Large

Backing Capacity (20 lb): WF3F - 60 yards / WF4F - 50 yards

Drag Type: Stacked Discs (sealed)

Tested Max Drag: Approx 2.5 pounds

Spool Release: Pull apart

Reel Pouch Included: Yes

R/L Interchangeable: Yes

Available Colors: Black or Platinum

Spare Spool: $356.25

Reel Price: $475.00

As seen in the picture above, these reels feature bell-shaped arbors. Ross says this adds strength and helps the line lay level while retrieving. A channel runs down the center of the arbor and gives the arbor knot a place to hide out so it's not visible through the open spool design.

The one thing I love about the Ross Evolution LTX fly reel is the minimalist, airy design. On top of looking slick, this obviously also shaves a lot of unnecessary weight from the frame and spool. On my scale, I measured a weight (without line/backing) of approximately 4.31 ounces. While it feels nice and lightweight in hand, lighter reels such as the Redington RISE 3/4 (4 ounces) or Waterworks-Lamson Litespeed F -3+ (3.4 ounces) do exist. With that said, the LTX feels right at home on a modern, lightweight rod.

These reels are machined from a proprietary 6061-T6 aluminum alloy that's made just for Ross. My LTX sports excellent machining throughout, with no sharp edges, burrs, or otherwise unrefined areas to be found. Overall, the craftsmanship will please even the most critical eye.

Fishing/Testing

Ross states that the LTX's fully-sealed drag system is "based on the engineered stacked-disc system in the Evolution R." One thing is for certain: this drag is silky. It starts up without any hint of hesitation at any setting and comes off the spool in a smooth, consistent flow. Although Ross says the drag is over four times stronger than the original Evolution LT, I was only able to eek out approximately 2.5 pounds of drag pressure—plenty for most trout and other light freshwater applications a reel of this size is intended for.

The tall, chunky shape of the drag knob and its textured surface makes it really easy to grab. It takes about 2 1/2 turns to go from minimum to maximum pressure, with not much noticeable change in drag pressure happening until the dial is turned about 1 1/2 times. Throughout the adjustment range, there are soft detents and not much in the way of sound. Something else I notice is that the drag knob has a little bit of play/looseness to it. This doesn't affect anything performance-wise, but feels a tad unrefined.

Ross equips the LTX with their canvas phenolic handle, which I'm a big fan of. It's sized and shaped perfectly, feels awesome, and has kind of a rustic, western look to it that's very fitting of this reel.

In my opinion, this is one of the better-sounding reels I've tested in recent memory. Both the incoming and outgoing clicks are modestly loud and offer a quality sound that's really pleasing to my ears.

Conclusion

This Evolution LTX 3/4 is my new personal reel that's used for small local warmwater species. Thus far, I've been quite satisfied with my purchase, as this reel's classy looks, light weight, and excellent drag system really appeal to me. Although this reel has been around for a few years now, it's still a top contender that shouldn't be overlooked.

Besides the tested 3/4 size, Ross Evolution LTX fly reels also come in 4/5, 5/6, and 7/8 sizes, all (surprisingly) costing $475 a piece. Each reel is offered in black or platinum and arrives with a protective neoprene pouch.

ECHO Fly Fishing’s original Boost fly rods are renowned for their crisp, fast action and balance of power and precision. Updated for 2023, the new Boost Fresh series is designed to help anglers who possess an aggressive casting stroke and are looking for maximum line speed. Boost Fresh are modern, fast action rods that excel at catching all freshwater species, in any conditions. The new updates lighten the rod and refine the action providing the feel needed to initiate a cast while and extra power in the bottom half for cranking out long casts.

The Boost Fresh family of rods takes advantage of lighter blank construction, which contributes to higher line speeds and reduced fatigue during long days on the water. The construction helps reduce shock waves in the line as the loop unrolls on back and forward casts. Boost Fresh rods help eliminate tailing loops and are designed to deliver your fly on target in tough conditions or when throwing bulky flies.

Many years of design experience have taught ECHO’s Tim Rajeff that the more power a rod has, the more it should also have a corresponding fast action. “The Boost Fresh lives up to its name. It will become your go-to rod when the wind picks up and conditions get tough,” says Rajeff.

Boost Fresh rods come in four pieces for easy travel. They have a half-wells handle, ceramic stripper guides and are bathed in metallic olive paint. The new series is available in four weights and sizes for a wide variety of fishing scenarios:

4wt 8’0” BSTFRESH-480

4wt 9’0” BSTFRESH-490

5wt 9’0” BSTFRESH-590

6wt 9’0” BSTFRESH-690

ECHO Boost Fresh fly rods are priced at $279.00 each.

Cheeky’s award-winning Rev Carbon Drag allows this reel to punch far above its weight class in the drag department. And, this kind of value and versatility is way below the price point you’d expect for this type of innovation and design. Prices come in well under $200.

We are proud to add the all-new Sighter Fly Reels to the Cheeky lineup. Sighter comes in four sizes ranging from 2 weight to 9 weight compatible and starts at $169.

The New Cheeky All-Day Sink Tip Fly Lines are made for streamer fishing fun. Designed by Cheeky, the All-Day Sink Tip lines add enough sink rate to give you real versatility on the river and lake or for chasing salty critters.

Although in the 2023 product line, both products are available later this Fall.

<![CDATA[Temple Fork PRO III 5-Weight Fly Rod Review]]>https://www.demystifly.com/post/temple-fork-pro-iii-5-weight-fly-rod-review62d0d8e10f872e5ab8ddc466Sun, 30 Oct 2022 03:17:56 GMTPaul

Intro/Specs/Craftsmanship

Temple Fork Outfitters (TFO) is a brand name that is synonymous with affordability. Although TFO has some higher end, more moderately-priced offerings within their massive lineup, they still offer a healthy number of rods (and reels!) with very friendly price tags. Over the years, I've heard folks say that fly fishing is only for the "elite" or the "rich," but TFO has helped squash that stereotype by allowing more people to access good equipment.

Picking up where the Pro II left off, the new Pro III series offers upgraded guides, ferrules, materials, cosmetics, and the addition of a rod tube. I know the previous gen was a hit among value-oriented anglers, plus it had been a long while since I've fished a TFO, so I was eager to experience the 5-weight Pro III for myself!

Length: 9'0"

Rated Action: Moderate

Line Weight: 5

Pieces: 4

Material: Graphite

Measured Weight: Approx 3.19 ounces

Stripping Guides: (2) Stainless w/ SiC inserts

Snake Guides: Double-Foot

Reel Seat: Aluminum w/ Graphite Insert

Rod Tube/Sock: Yes/Yes

Price: $229.95

The reverse half-wells grip on the 5-weight has a nice trim profile, giving it appropriate proportions for the rod while remaining very comfortable to hold. Quality-wise, the cork is decent but gets the job done. On each end of the handle, there's EVA foam trim which adds contrast and prevents cork damage in these spots.

Moving down to the reel seat, this one is built from aluminum with a dark blue carbon spacer, all of which match the rod nicely. The double up-locking rings hold a reel securely, and there's a guide line indicating exactly where the reel foot slides in.

I love rods that aren't glossy, so the Pro III's satin black hits the mark for me. The two SiC stripping guides and all snake guides are secured to the rod with dark blue wraps, and there's some silver trim around the hook keeper and stripping guides. Not to be forgotten, easy-to-see white alignment dots make ferrule attachment a snap. Overall, the subtle cosmetics work well and offer a look that's simple without being too plain.

It's always kind of amusing (and most certainly disappointing) when I inspect an ultra-premium rod and find some type of visual or construction imperfection. It's even more amusing (and certainly not disappointing) when I inspect an affordably priced rod and find excellent workmanship. As you might be able to infer, my Pro III tester sports a clean build along with tight ferrules and components...two thumbs up!

Fishing/Testing

All fishing and testing was done with a RIO Elite Gold WF5F fly line. With a 30-foot head weight of 146 grains, this places the line at the uppermost end of AFFTA's 5-weight fly line grain ratings. TFO rates this rod as having a "moderate" action, so I felt a line like this that's not built overweight would work best.

Like the old Pro II's, every Pro III rod is rated with a moderate action. With this in mind, I was expecting a soft, somewhat noodly rod that would respond to a slower casting stroke and not be too great at distance casting. Well, in my hands, the Pro III 5-weight's action feels like it skews faster than what the rating suggests.

At very short ranges, the rod offers enough feedback to remain pleasant and accurate. A softer action or heavier line would make it even better here, but the rod is far from numb or dead-feeling in close. I would have no issues using this rod for some delicate, close-quarters dry fly fishing.

At "typical" fishing distances of around 40 feet, I'd rate the casting performance as above average. I REALLY like how the rod feels casting here, and the accuracy doesn't disappoint. The blank feels like it still has power on tap, and I'm able to easily achieve tight loops without having to uncomfortably alter my casting style. Unsurprisingly, it doesn't have quite that ultra-refined feel of a top-dollar stick, but casting at these medium distances is supremely enjoyable.

The Pro III truly delighted me how well it could shoot an entire 100-foot fly line. It's definitely not the typical stiff, ultra-fast rod I'd typically gravitate to for such glory casting, but it's entirely capable of showing off a bit. While casting such extreme lengths (especially with a 5 weight) is seldom needed, I can't resist testing a rod's limits on the grass.

Regarding swing weight, this isn't the lightest 5-weight fly rod I've experienced, but it's surely not a clunker. I wouldn't have any issues casting it for a full day.

Conclusion

The TFO Pro III 5-weight fly rod offers anglers an affordably-priced option that performs admirably and is backed by an incredible full lifetime warranty. If you need an all-around rod with a faster action, this stick is capable of handling everything including nymphing, dries, and small streamers.

Single and double-handed models are available from 3–10 weight, and each rod includes a sock and tube. Prices range from $229.95 to $359.95 depending on line weight and length.

<![CDATA[Bajio Roca Sunglasses Review]]>https://www.demystifly.com/post/bajio-roca-sunglasses-review62a3860177ba450253aa08fbSun, 21 Aug 2022 21:52:40 GMTPaul

For the vast majority of my fishing life, I wore nothing but cheap sunglasses with grey lenses. It didn't matter if the skies were cloudy or sunny; I never experimented with anything else. As a matter of fact, I'm not sure if I ever owned more than one pair at a time! While grey might not be the optimal lens color in a lot of scenarios, they worked well enough for me, and that included an awful lot of sight-fishing in both fresh and saltwater...so why change?

When I started reviewing fishing and outdoor gear some years ago, this kind of "forced" me to finally break my old ways and sample some higher-end sunglasses with different lens colors. I can't resist making a corny pun here, but that was quite an eye-opening experience! A higher-quality lens in a color more closely matched to the conditions at hand truly does make a noticeable difference. Although I've now reviewed several types of sunglasses, none of them have included rose-mirror lenses. That all changed recently when I received a pair from Bajio!

Launched at ICAST 2021, Bajio (pronounced bah-hee-oh) is a very young company in the world of optics. However, there is no lack of experience here, as Founder and CEO, Al Perkinson, previously spent just over 11 years as Vice President of Marketing at Costa. Bajio exudes a hip, adventurous, carefree vibe and couples that with a huge emphasis on carbon neutrality and sustainability.

From Bajio:

"Bajío offers castor-based bioplastic frames, coconut husk-based frames and we are currently working on frames made from recycled water bottles as well as recycled nylon frames made from ocean trash and carpet remnants. Stay tuned for more information as we test, retest and offer new materials."

The Bajios I received were the Roca frames, which coincidentally won the "Best Eyewear" award at ICAST 2022. The XL size designation is no joke; these are BIG and offer a ton of protection. Although these are the largest of all my sunglasses, the comfort and protection are absolutely superb. I've recently become a true fan of "oversized" frames like these, but the Rocas are at about the upper limit of what I'd want to wear size-wise.

The Roca's bio-based nylon frame is derived from plants and is said to be lighter and stronger than traditional plastic. Overall, the design structure is quite ergonomic and has notable features like wide temples, flexible hinges at the temple-to-frame joint, top/bottom/side sun ledges to cut down on glare intrusion, vented nose pads and side shields, and adjustable temples that sport textured rubber tips with keeper holes.

All of Bajio's lenses are equipped with their LAPIS technology which is stated to "...block 95% of blue light up to 440 nm and the majority of intense yellow light at its peak of 580 nm. This means no more hazy days and no more color interference." In fact, Bajio claims their glasses block more blue light than any other brand. Additionally, lenses get a special protective coating to resist scratching and allow for easy cleaning.

Roca glasses are designed specifically for sight fishing and are available with glass or polycarbonate lenses—my pair has the latter. The rose-mirror lenses were honestly not my first choice because I wasn't confident how this new-to-me color would perform, but my contact at Bajio reassured me that these were an excellent choice...I'm glad I listened to him!

In addition to constantly wearing these while driving and just doing general "stuff" outside, I've worn them when fishing on local beaches and freshwater canals. The high-contrast lenses are said to be great in "all skies," but I've found them to be equally excellent for all waters, too.

My Rocas not only look incredibly slick, but they have proven to be a solid all-around choice for sight fishing. I've had no trouble spotting snook and freshwater species while fishing under clear or partly cloudy skies and in waters ranging from clear to lightly-stained. On my face, they stay put very well and the hinges are stiff enough so that they can securely be worn on my shirt collar when not in use. One of my favorite aspects is the extreme comfort during long days; the lightweight wrap-around design coupled with the smooth, pleasant frame surface makes them a joy to wear for hours at a time.

I wasn't expecting the Roca to top my other sunglasses, but these have earned the spot as my new personal favorites. On or off the water, they provide the necessary clarity and protection, all while looking damn good at the same time.

As mentioned, Roca sunglasses come with glass or polycarbonate lenses and are available in three frame colors and seven lens colors. Each pair includes a plant-based protective case that's made from cactus leather. Bajio Roca sunglasses are priced at $199 (as tested) and go up to $249.
